that in the senate. in terms of saving money on defense, you are right, and we are. the two sides agreed to over $500 billion in defense cuts. people say is this funny money, is it real? it is not something i am in favor of because we live in a dangerous world we will lose 75,000 soldiers. we wanted to have 213 combat vessels. we will have 288. this is real reduction. i think the secretary of defense, secretary leon panetta has -- will tell you we have gone as far as we can safely go. i think both sides, and the president, i do not think we want military capability lower. i think we have saved as much as we possibly can. in terms of the other things, after the bush tax cuts came to thousand three, and revenue is higher than it was in 2003, and generated a lot of growth, and the deficit with the last republican majority leaving office -- our problem is a spending problem. we're spending a lot more money than we were then when the president came into office. we're putting off dealing with entitlement programs. we will double the people on medicare in the next 20 years. we should focus on where the prob

about energy when it was a forbidden topic in the defense department. this was through 2004. i got funding from the department of defense and it created the energy conversation. i want to get to a point that was brought up in number of times, having the american public understand this unbelievably complex story. i recommend you all watch alan alda's vido, "the flame." he asked what it was money was small and could not get an answer. he went up was done every university and they put on a worldwide contest to explain what a flame is to 11 year-old. they had 600 submissions and 6011 year old evaluated this. keep in mind how complex that is. i bought a book two weeks ago called "black gold" for my granddaughter by albert marin. i recommend of the academics in this room or anywhere. not many people are going to read or understand your report. a lot of what needs doing telling this story as that it has to be visual because it is so unbelievably complicated, interdependence, integrated, and for most of us, it just looks like chaos. i'm going to suggest that you do things like kids were st

and defensiveness about the coal industry on the wane in america. today coal provides a third of the power down from nearly half four years ago. coal-burning power plants are shuting down across the country. there's a war on coal as you may have heard during the campaign, but the aggressors aren't bureaucra bureaucrats but it's natural gas. specifically the technology radically transformed natural gas production something called hydraulic fracturing or fracking. the name is opaque but the goal is simple. tens of thousands of feet below the surface there are deposits of natural gas trapped up within giant rock formations. fracking lets energy companies drill down to release the gas. that process has fundamentally revolutionized america's energy economy in a few years. the average annual price of natural gas is less than half what it was in 2008. large swaths of the united states from colorado to texas to ohio to upup state new york have massive natural gas reserves making them right for fracking. rhetts rebel based on concerns about health and the safety of the process. those battles may decide the c

cuts and entitlements or at least reform there. hasn't heard as much from defense. you are from a state that relies on that defense budget. it will get cut substantially. where does defense end up if we do get a deal? >> everybody wants to avoid sequestration. lots of my friends in the defense industry say don't do sequestration. do simpson-bowles indicating they have not read simpson-bowles because it was almost as high as sequestration in the top number. the numbers are roughly within the budget control act over ten years about $480 billion of defense cuts. sequestration almost doubles that. i think you'll see something north of 480 billion. substantially lower than that 950. what folks in defense industry have said is in addition to giving us a number, give us the ability to plan. one of the things that hobbles our defense industry more than anything is the absurd way we have run the federal government on three and six-month continuing resolutions. give us a window to plan and any legitimate business can plan against the budget. give us that number. >> some see that debt limit contro

is not identified in this proposal. so what does that mean? all those defense cuts we heard so much about, essentially the answer is there's enough savings in this plan that could -- that we could deal with the sequester, saying there could be a punt on the sequester by the savings on this plan. there's a lot of information in here. it's very wonky. obviously, this is drawn out between the geithner and lou and boehner's people, but we see a new offer from speaker john boehner that he is not the house republican budget. they're trying to move more to the middle, and they believe this is the best way to do so, guys. >> on that $600 billion in health savings, do we have any clarity on what that would be? bahama ca obama care, medicare, medicaid? >> from the briefing it pertains to medicare and medicaid. the one specific thing we got is part of the health savings in the $600 billion mark would come from raising the medicare entry age from 65 to 67. something that the house republicans have talked about before. that is very much a big part of that 600 billion in health savings. >> thanks, luke

. as widely expected they agreed to take up a challenge to the federal defense of marriage act, which is the federal law that says the federal government cannot recognize same-sex marriages even in the states where they're legal. but and i think this is the surprising part the justices also aagreed to take up a challenge to california's proposition 8, which could either be a very narrow decision about california only or the justices could take up the basic question about whether states can deny same sex couples the ability to get married. these cases won't be argued until probably march, but i think it's very surprising. this is a huge action by the supreme court today wading fully into the issue of same-sex marriage. so it's going to mean that this will be an absolute blockbuster term. >> pete, can you talk a little bit about what it means to take two cases in this way at the same time? we know from the aca decision that justice roberts cares deeply about his legacy and the legacy of the court. how do we read that into this discussion? is he going to want to be part of a decision str

go here as we go down the list, reducing military spending, reducing non-defense spending. all of that is negative. a slight positive on reducing non-defense spending for republicans. but then you take these last three. raising the retirement age, raising income taxes for everybody, raising medicare for spending. net negative for all three political factions. democrats, republicans, and independents. one thing you'll notice here quickly is that the red here, reducing military spending debt, is the most net negative for the republicans. even more negative than raisings taxes on all people. >> you know, i look at that. if i'm understanding it correctly, my initial reaction is, are americans just in a fantasy land over medicare spending? you can't get there unless you reduce medicare spending. >> i think that may be true. i think when we talk about leadership and political leadership taking risks, i think one of the things people have to do is politicians step forward and say, okay, here's the benefit and here's the cost. if weaver get there, we can start to poll that and ask peop

reporter joe carter is here to talk about all of this. what did he say in his own defense? >> i found several fire bob costas facebook pages with lots of likes. he went on the shows yesterday morning and defended himself and said that he did admit he made a mistake, that he used wrong forum to take on such a heavy-handed topic, that he should have listened to his own rule which is when you take on a topic as politically charged as gun control, leave yourself enough time to fully flush out that topic. and as we know in television, you only have so much time to talk about a certain topic. he had only about 90 seconds to discuss that topic. he broke his own broadcasting rule in taking on that topic in that forum. he also said he doesn't disagree with the second amendment, he believes people should have the right to bear arms but he believes we should change the gun culture in your country, like grabbing your keys, grabbing your wallet, grabbing your gun before you leave the house is how the culture needs to change. and the amount of people who want him to be fired for what he said sunday
